Working For Veterans
In 2017, Governor Malloy, through an Executive Order, stopped funding Military Honors at Veterans funerals. As Vice Chair of the Veterans Committee, I immediately organized with the CT Funeral Home Association and non-governmental agencies to continue to provide Honors to any veteran in Connecticut. Not one veteran went without. Since then, I've worked to ensure that funding for Military Honors has been in every budget without fail.
In 2018, I co-authored landmark PTSD legislation to ensure veterans who were dishonorably discharged due to PTSD, Traumatic Brain Injury, and victims of military sexual assault were able to keep their benefits.
Recently I learned that veterans are having difficulty buying a home in CT because the federal VA loans are difficult to navigate and take an average 45 days to close, making veteran buyers undesirable. To help overcome that problem, I will propose legislation to reduce or eliminate the conveyance tax for any seller who accepts a veteran buyer with a VA loan.
